University of Chicago Performing Arts Center 2017 Schedule

The University of Chicago will once again serve as a partner and participant in EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, September 13-17, 2017 at Navy Pier.

In its sixth edition, EXPO CHICAGO, presents artwork from 140 leading galleries, representing 16 countries and 47 cities from around the world. Through collaborative IN/SITU, /Dialogues, and Special Exhibition programs, it also reveals how the University of Chicago is shaping Chicago's greater contemporary art landscape.

As in years past, the 2017 EXPO CHICAGO features the work of DoVA alumni and faculty and showcases several University of Chicago arts organizations.

Cinthia Marcelle and Tiago Mata Machado: Divine Violence

Logan Center Exhibitions presents an exhibition by artist Cinthia Marcelle and filmmaker Tiago Mata Machado. Hailing from Brazil, Marcelle and Mata Machado are longtime collaborators, and this is the first time their works Community (2016), One Way Street (2013), and The Century (2011) are shown together in the US. Representing moments of order and chaos through compellingly staged and abstracted scenes of bodies and inanimate objects, the works on view speculate on the poetics and politics of urban life in Brazil and other global locations.
Presented by Logan Center Exhibitions with support from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Revolution Every Day

Presented on the centenary of the Russian Revolution, this exhibition juxtaposes Soviet posters from the 1920s and 1930s with works on video and film with a focus on the experiences of women under (and after) communism. Featuring works by Lene Berg, Olga Chernysheva, Vitaly Komar, Anri Sala, and Cauleen Smith.

This year, DoVA's booth at Expo Chicago presents work in diverse media that share a fresh lyrical sensibility with strangely ominous over- or undertones. Artists representing DoVA at Expo this year include: Joshua Backus (painting), Elisabeth Hogeman (photography), Gabe Moreno (sculpture), Anne Showers- Cruser (sculpture), and Morganne Wakefield (work on paper).

The Hysterical Material

This exhibition investigates the emotional possibility of material in works Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) and Bruce Nauman (born 1941). It places works by Rodin and Nauman into unusual spatial relationships, calling attention to how each sculptor conceives of the body as an emotional instrument.Presented as part of Rodin 100.

Emmanuel Pratt's interdisciplinary approach to regenerative placemaking on the South Side of Chicago mixes art, architecture, and community and economic development. His new, site-specific installation transforms the Smart Museum's lobby and courtyard.

Conversations with the Collection: Building Environments

A collection-based installation that questions the ways we occupy and perceive the built environment. The project mixes works from across cultures and eras, from European engravings of monumental architecture and intimate interiors to contemporary works by Laurie Palmer and Wendy Jacob, Michael Rakowitz, H.C. Westermann, and others.

Welcome Blanket

Pussyhat Project co-founder Jayna Zweiman's Welcome Blanket reimagines the length of the proposed US-Mexico border wall as a tapestry of handmade blankets. Over 3,000 crowd-sourced blankets and notes of welcome will be assembled into a gallery installation and site of convergence for conversations about immigration and artistic activism.

Terence Gower: Havana Case Study

This exhibition, the second in a series that uses American diplomatic architecture as a lens through which to analyze US international relations, is based on extensive research in Havana and in US archives. The centerpiece imagines an architectural exhibition on the embassy building, and the sculpture Balcony, installed on the lawn adjacent to the gallery, is a 1:1 scale outline of the ambassador's balcony—a symbol of diplomatic stalemate and its political and economic fallout. Reception and artist talk on September 12.

uChicago Architecture Biennial Shuttle
Saturday, September 16, 2017, from 10am – 5pm.Tour provided at 1pm; shuttles depart from the Logan Center on the hour.

The uChicago Architecture Biennial Shuttle will run on an hourly loop to various sites of architectural activity and speculation on and around the University's Hyde Park campus, including the new Campus Residence Hall designed by Studio Gang; the Arts Block, envisioned by Theaster Gates; the site for the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park; and the campus' landmark Mid-century buildings by Eero Saarinen and Mies van der Rohe. Other tour highlights include the Logan Center for the Arts designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects, and the Rebuild Foundation's Stony Island Arts Bank. Visitors can use the shuttle as a hop-on, hop-off means to stop at various destinations, including two of the Chicago Architecture Biennial's Community Anchor sites, the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Palais de Tokyo, the Hyde Park Art Center, and transportation stops. Guided shuttle tours will be available on specified dates and times listed.  Reservations for tours recommended. The shuttle is sponsored by the Office of Civic Engagement, UChicago Urban, and UChicago Arts.
